Aphasia Research Laboratory

College of Communication and Information

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder that results from brain injury, usually from a stroke in the left side of the brain. Aphasia affects a person’s ability to talk, understand, read, and write. The Aphasia Research Laboratory studies how aphasia influences a person's communication abilities, and designs and tests out behavioral treatments that can help people with aphasia improve their daily communication. The Lab has a particular interest in the rehabilitation of written language (reading and spelling) abilities after stroke.

The lab also studies the impact of aphasia on the friendships and social well-being of people with aphasia and their care partners and are working towards interventions and resources to support friendship.
